Chinese illegal cigarettes seized
| MANILA - PHILIPPINE customs authorities have seized a container loaded with counterfeit cigarettes from China with a street value of 10 million pesos (S$310,000).
Customs Commissioner Napoleon Morales said on Thursday the Marlboro-branded cigarettes arrived Nov 2 from China. The raid followed a tip from the intelligence liaison office of the World Customs Organisation. He says they were marked 'Made in the Philippines' and declared as household wares. No arrests were made. The Philippine Customs Intelligence and Investigation Service and Philip Morris International confirmed they were counterfeit. The seizure is part of a global crackdown that has netted more than 274 million counterfeit cigarettes since 2005. -- AP | |
