All passengers on board the flight from the main economic hub of Yangon to the city of Mandalay in central Myanmar were reported safe after the plane landed at Naypyidaw, they said.

'No passenger was injured although the Air Mandalay flight made an emergency landing at Naypyidaw airport', an airport staff member at the remote capital city's airport told AFP.

'It was because of a wires problem and airline officials are waiting for technical engineers here', the official said without giving further details.

There was no official confirmation from the airline itself.

Air Mandalay was formed in 1994 and operates a fleet of European-built ATR-42 and ATR-72 turboprop aircraft, the airline's website says.

It operates a daily morning flight to the central city of Mandalay from Yangon and also flies to other domestic destinations, an airline company official said.

The airline suspended flights to Chiang Mai in northern Thailand a few months ago, the official said without giving a reason.

Air Mandalay's shareholders are the flag carrier Myanmar Airways, Air Mandalay Holdings of Singapore and Premier Airlines of Malaysia, the website says.

Air incidents are very rare in this impoverished country as there are only a few domestic and international flights a day.

Most people in Myanmar rely on cheaper forms of transport such as buses, trains and ships.
