The ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP) took 90 seats of the 123 up for grabs in the July ballot, while the main opposition Sam Rainsy Party received 26 seats, the National Election Committee announced on state-run television.

The Human Rights Party won 3 seats while the royalist parties - Funcinpec and the Norodom Ranariddh Party - got two seats each, according to official results.

The landslide victory for the CPP means Hun Sen will extend his 23-year grip on power.

However, the Sam Rainsy and Human Rights Parties disputed the election, saying the CPP got its crushing majority after thousands of people were intentionally left off voter lists.

They have written complaints to leaders of the 18 nations who signed the 1991 Paris Peace Accord, which cleared the way for Cambodia's first democratic election in 1993.

But Tep Nytha, election committee general secretary, said all complaints from political parties about the July 27 poll had been resolved.

'We are successfully done with the election,' he told AFP.

The first meeting of Cambodia's new parliament is scheduled for September 24, ahead of forming the new government.

Mr Hun Sen has a reputation for trampling on human rights to secure power, but a booming economy has bolstered his standing in a country struggling to lift itself from the ranks of the world's poorest nations. -- AFP
