LONDON - BRITISH Airways said on Monday it had agreed to buy 11 jets from Brazilian aircraft maker Embraer, with options on three more, in a deal worth US$376 million (S$544 million). 'British Airways has placed firm orders for a fleet of 11 new generation fuel efficient aircraft that will offer passengers unrivalled levels of space and comfort on board,' BA said in an official statement. 'Firm orders have been placed for six Embraer 170 and five Embraer 190SR efficiency jets, known as E-jets, with options for three more in an investment worth US$376 million, based on current list prices.' The carrier said its CityFlyer division would take delivery of the Embraer aircraft, which will fly from London's City Airport, from September 2009. The new jets will operate on routes to Ireland, Scotland and Europe, BA added. High fuel costs are encouraging many of the world's biggest airlines to snap up more energy-efficient planes. -- AFP | |
