STI closes 3% lower

SINGAPORE shares closed 3.0 per cent lower on Friday after the United States Senate failed to reach a deal on bailing out the auto industry, raising concerns of a prolonged US recession, dealers said.

The blue-chip Straits Times Index was down 53.82 points at 1,740.34.

About 1.03 billion shares exchanged hands.

Losers beat gainers 279 to 152.
