Sources told The Straits Times that Singapore's largest bank has started notifying the staff whose services are no longer needed.

Some DBS workers were said to be in tears on being told at work. But it is not known if the staff have been told to leave immediately.

Last Friday, DBS said it will cut 900 jobs, mostly in its Singapore and Hong Kong units.

The news came on the same day DBS reported its sharpest fall in profits two years.

A bank spokesman said on Wednesday that the retrenched staff would be from different functions and ranks within the bank but those in junior ranks will be 'relatively less affected.'

DBS has said it will help those laid off with counselling and support activities, such as job search through outplacement services.
