| A MOODY, melancholic thread seems to run through British director Sam Mendes' movies.
His first film American Beauty (1999), for which he won an Oscar for Best Director, is a haunting exploration of suburban anxieties. There is also the violent tale of revenge and redemption called The Road To Perdition (2002) and last year's Revolutionary Road, a film about dashed hopes and a crumbling marriage based on the Richard Yates novel.
