Ex-Pakistan cricketer jailed

| LAHORE (Pakistan) - A PAKISTANI court remanded former test cricketer Ijaz Ahmed in custody on Friday for issuing forged checks worth more than $130,000, his lawyer said.
Kashid Javed said Ahmed would be held in custody for 14 days, but that he was hoping his client would be released on bail. 'We have applied for the bail and hopefully Ijaz Ahmed will be released by Saturday,' Javed said. Ahmed, 40, was arrested March 26 for allegedly writing checks to two property dealers that bounced. Ahmed played 60 tests and scored 3,315 runs before retiring in 2001. He was also a member of Pakistan's World Cup-winning squad in 1992 and scored 6,564 runs in 250 one-day internationals. -- AP | |
