The Elections Department was again a hive of activity yesterday, the second day after the Writ of Election for the Sept 11 polls was issued, with party leaders and potential candidates arriving throughout the day.

Most were there to submit candidates' Political Donation Certificates, and certificates from the Malay Community Committee and the Indian and Other Minority Communities Committee.

A handful of independent candidates also went to the department in Prinsep Link to collect forms.

Among the people, about 20, who turned up were People's Action Party representatives Alex Yam and Christopher de Souza, Singapore People's Party chairman Lina Chiam, and Reform Party (RP) secretary-general Kenneth Jeyaretnam and chairman Andy Zhu.

Mr de Souza said he was there with Mr Yam, who is executive director of PAP headquarters, to submit the certificates for all constituencies the party will be contesting.

Mrs Chiam, who handed in similar forms for candidates in three single-seat wards, arrived with party members Jeannette Chong-Aruldoss and Ravi Philemon.

Mr Jeyaretnam was accompanied by blogger Roy Ngerng and lawyer M. Ravi, both of whom are expected to be candidates in RP's Ang Kio Kio GRC team. Singapore Democratic Alliance member Harminder Pal Singh was also there to hand in forms for his party's candidates.

Veteran opposition politician Ng Teck Siong, who tried but failed to contest the 2011 General Election when his GRC team missed the deadline for filing nomination papers, turned up to collect nomination forms and wants to contest as an independent.

Another independent, blogger Han Hui Hui, who collected forms on Wednesday, returned to submit her political donations certificate.

Three others who picked up forms were retired businessman Tan Peng Hai and two men who said they were doing so on behalf of friends.
