1. REAL HAMMER TIME

They are a common sight at Workers' Party rallies: hammers - representing the party's symbol - in all forms, shapes and sizes, including giant balloons and even neon-lit ones.

But on Monday morning (Sept 7), we spotted a WP supporter carrying an actual hammer and cheering "confirm win!" when the East Coast GRC team members were on their walkabout at a food centre in Bedok North. When approached, the elderly man refused to comment on his, er, prop.

2. NOT SO SHIP SHAPE

Workers' Party chief Low Thia Khiang responded to ESM Goh Chok Tong's comment that the ruling People's Action Party (PAP) is a cruise ship with a definite destination, whereas WP is a gambling ship to nowhere, saying the cruise ship in Mr Goh's analogy is the Titanic.

"The name is Titanic," Mr Low said on Monday (Sept 7), referring to the passenger vessel involved in the infamous 1912 maritime disaster. It sank in the Atlantic Ocean, killing more than a thousand of the people onboard.

"I'm afraid the cruise ship is over capacity limit. It used to be a luxury cruise ship. The designer claimed that it's not sinkable.

"There are not enough lifeboats, no preparations or provisions for failure. Thank you Mr Goh for reminding us," Mr Low added.

On Sunday, Mr Goh likened the PAP and the WP to different types of cruise ships.

"If you go with the PAP, you're embarking on a cruise ship with a definite destination... You know the captain, the crew members, you know the quality."

But other parties are cruise ships with no clear destination, Mr Goh said. "These are gambling ships, casinos. Very exciting. So you can take this ship, you can gamble, but you go nowhere."

3. LUNCH SEASONED WITH POLITICS

For office workers in the Central Business District, lunch was a little different from the usual sit-down meal at a food court or coffeeshop on Monday.

Many made their way to the UOB plaza promenade to attend the first lunchtime rally of this election, with some seen tucking into their packed lunches as they listened to speakers from the Singapore Democratic Party. Despite the heat, the plaza was filled to the brim.

4. CAMPAIGNING VIA SKYPE

How do you reach out to voters who are overseas? PAP candidate for West Coast GRC Lim Hng Kiang tapped into technology: Skype.

During one of his house visits, a resident told him that his wife wanted to meet him but she was away during this campaign period. So Mr Lim communicated with her on Skype. And it seems like it was a pleasant encounter, judging from the expression of the woman at the other end of the phone.

5. STAIRMASTER

A day after he came under the spotlight for performing CPR on an elderly man who had collapsed at a market in Ang Mo Kio, Dr Koh Poh Koon was seen running up and down the stairs of HDB blocks while doing his home visits.

Seems like PAP Marine Parade GRC candidate Tan Chuan-Jin is not the only candidate doing "run-abouts" in this campaign.

6. BREAKFAST, ANYONE?

Instead of going to the voters, one candidate is asking them to come to him.

In a Facebook post on Monday morning, Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC candidate Lawrence Wong invited residents to join him for breakfast. He later posted a photo of what he was having for breakfast - eggs and kaya toast. But he did not say if any resident took up his invitation.

7. HAIR TODAY...

Yes, it's the campaign period, but physical appearance is important too. PAP candidate for Sembawang GRC Vikram Nair took a break from his hectic campaign schedule and went for a haircut today.

Oh, it's part of the campaign, actually. He was preparing himself for the rally tonight. "Looking a bit tidier for tonight's rally," he said.
