SINGAPORE - Tanjong Pagar GRC MPs introduced a potential colleague to residents on Sunday morning.

Clad in a white polo tee-shirt, former public servant Joan Pereira greeted residents and diners at Bukit Merah View market, alongside Minister in the Prime Minister's Office Chan Chun Sing, Senior Minister of State Indranee Rajah, MPs Lily Neo and Chia Shi-Lu, and about 30 People's Action Party (PAP) activists.

They had earlier taken several group photographs in the area.

Ms Pereira, 47, is now assistant general manager at Temasek Cares, the charity arm of Temasek Holdings. She was, until April, the director of Family Life and Active Ageing at the People's Association.

That she has been introduced as a new face, two days after the release of the electoral boundaries report, has fuelled speculation that she will contest the next general election.

  • Bio-data

  • Joan Cheng Sim Pereira, 47

    - Assistant general manager at Temasek Cares

    - Married to a 51-year-old in the shipping line, with two daughters, a 20-year-old at a polytechnic and a 17-year-old in a junior college

    - Speaks English, Mandarin and Cantonese

Speaking to reporters after the walkabout, Mr Chan said he "appreciated Joan's presence in the team, as she has many years of experience helping the elderly".

Ms Pereira, a mother of two teenage daughters, has been shadowing Ms Indranee in her Tanglin-Cairnhill ward since May.

The two women have drawn comparisons for their similar height and hairstyles.

But Ms Indranee was quick to point out that despite the similarities, "Joan very much has her own personality. There is no cloning process".
