BANGKOK - In the calm before the lunch-hour scrum at Bangkok's Udom Suk market, Ms Somsong Samnan patiently teaches a customer how to pay for his purchase using an application on his mobile phone.

"Can you do it?" the 53-year-old vendor coos gently, as the customer fumbles with his phone.
