Malaysian villagers beg spirits to end quake aftershocks
Borneo tribal shamans chanted age-old prayers on Saturday in a ceremony in Malaysia aimed at soothing spirits and bringing an end to disturbing aftershocks from an earthquake that killed 18 people.
About 100 members of the Kadazan Dusun, the largest tribal group in the Malaysian state of Sabah, held the ritual in the state's Tamparuli district after a 5.1-magnitude aftershock shook the area on Saturday.
Villagers, still rattled after the original 6.0-magnitude quake on June 5 that was centred near the popular climbing peak of Mount Kinabalu, ran from their homes during the aftershock.
It was one of several to hit Sabah on Saturday and dozens since the original tremor.

A South Korean man thought to have contracted the potentially deadly Mers virus was hospitalised in the Slovak capital Bratislava on Saturday, a spokeswoman said.
"He is a 38-year-old man from South Korea who is suffering from diarrhoea, fever and lesions on his skin," Petra Stano Matasovska, from Bratislava's university hospital, told AFP.
Local media said the man arrived in Slovakia on June 3 and works for a subcontractor of South Korean carmaker Kia based in the northern town of Zilina.

Snipers shot and killed a man in Texas on Saturday, ending a spectacular rampage in which he planted several bombs and sprayed the police headquarters with gunfire, authorities said.
Despite the mayhem, which also saw police cars get peppered with bullets, no one else was killed in the attack in the sprawling city of Dallas. Police ruled out any connection to terrorism.
The stunning night of violence began around 12.30am (1.30pm Singapore time), when a man in an armoured van rammed into police squad cars at the headquarters and the suspect opened fire.
Shots rang out from several different locations, leading police initially to believe multiple gunmen were involved, before they established the attacker was acting alone.
