Moon gazers had a cosmological treat on Sunday (Aug 10, 2014) when a supermoon lit up skies around the world.
The event occurs when the moon is closest to the Earth in its orbit, making it appear much larger and brighter than usual. The Guardian says a supermoon is about 14 per cent larger and 30 per cent brighter than normal.
There are three consecutive supermoons this year: The first one was on July 12, and the next one will be on Sept 9. But the supermoon on Sunday was touted as the most "super" one. It’s the closest and largest full moon of the year.
