US 'stands ready' to help Iraq

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The United States "stands ready" to help Iraq as it confronts a lightning offensive by jihadists who have seized at least two cities, a US official said on Wednesday.

Washington was committed to "working with the Iraqi government and leaders across Iraq to support a unified approach against Isil's continued aggression", State Department spokesman Jen Psaki told reporters, adding that additional US assistance was in the pipeline.
