Major 7.0-magnitude quake strikes central Peru: USGS

WASHINGTON (AFP) - A major 7.0-magnitude earthquake struck central Peru on Sunday, US experts said.

The quake was located 42 km east-northeast of Tambo at a depth of 58.9 km, the US Geological Survey said.

Positioned at 471 km south-east of the capital Lima, it hit at 2321 GMT.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injury.

But the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre cautioned that earthquakes of this size "sometimes generate local tsunamis that can be destructive along coasts located within 100 km of the earthquake epicentre."

"Authorities in the region of the epicentre should be aware of this possibility and take appropriate action," it added.
