The BNP Paribas WTA Finals Singapore presented by SC Global saw its first upset on Tuesday night, as world No. 2 Maria Sharapova was beaten 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (7-5), 2-6 by eighth seed Caroline Wozniacki in an epic 3hr 13min match at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

Wozniacki, the former girlfriend of golf star Rory McIlroy, continued her superb recent form which saw her reach last month's US Open final. The Dane broke Sharapova's opening service game, and while the Russian broke back soon after, she held firm in the tie-breaker to clinch the first set in 75 minutes.

The 24-year-old looked set to win the game in the second set as she led 5-4, but Sharapova roared back to break the Dane's serve and send the match into a second tie-breaker. The Russian beauty clinched the tie-breaker 7-5 to send the match into the third set. However, Sharapova could not sustain her powerful shot-making, as Wozniacki returned impeccable to seal the long match 6-2.

The match saw a minor controversy midway through the second set, when both Wozniacki and Sharapova complained that the spotlights were suddenly switched on above the court, and were too bright when they tried to serve. After a couple of games, the spotlights were turned off.
