MONTREAL (AFP) - Petra Kvitova's first tournament since her Wimbledon triumph came to an abrupt end on Thursday as she was bundled out of the WTA hardcourt tournament at Montreal by Ekaterina Makarova.

Russia's Makarova, ranked 19th in the world, defeated fourth-ranked Kvitova 6-4, 1-6, 6-2 in a battle of left-handers.

It was a disappointing end to the week for Kvitova, who claimed her second Wimbledon title last month.

She had been hoping to reprise her 2012 Canadian title, won when the tournament which alternates between Montreal and Toronto was last held in Quebec.

Her third-round exit followed that of French Open champion Maria Sharapova earlier in the day.
