School Sports: RI clinch first B Div squash title since 2008 with 4-1 win over ACS (I)

SINGAPORE - Raffles Institution (RI) won their first Schools National B Division boy's squash title since 2008 on Monday, after beating Anglo-Chinese School (Independent) (ACS(I)) 4-1 in the final at Ngee Ann Polytechnic.

RI had beaten ACS (I) 5-0 during the preliminary round, but ACS (I) proved their mettle by beating defending champions Fairfield Methodist Secondary School en route the to the finals.

But it all went wrong for ACS (I) in the first singles tie, as captain Randall Yeo was unable to counter his opponent Tan Hua Wang's unrelenting shots, eventually losing the first game 3-0.

That set the mood for the rest of the final, as Rutvik Rau of RI convincingly beat Dylan Kim in the second game. Joshua Chew kept ACS(I)'s title aspirations alive as he pulled one back, sparking loud cheers from the crowd as he beat RI captain Kevin Tong.

However, Anders Ong dashed all hopes of a comeback when the 15 year-old claimed a tense fourth tie to secure the win for his side.

"At first, I was really scared because the pressure was all on me to win it. After I got a few points, I felt more confident and got to play my game," said Anders. "The support from my teammates and the crowd also helped me overcome my nerves."

RI vice-captain, Tan Ijoe, wrapped up the final with a 3-0 win over Ong Li-Jin.

In the adjacent court, St. Andrew's Secondary beat Fairfield Methodist 3-2 to claim the bronze medal.
