Singaporean swimmer Joseph Schooling, The Straits Times Athlete of the Year for 2014, has won the 100-yard butterfly in 44.51 sec at the 2015 Men's National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I Swimming and Diving Championships in Iowa earlier on Saturday morning (Singapore time).

The University of Texas (UT) freshman touched home ahead of school-mate Jack Conger by 0.04s, in the process breaking former Olympian Ian Crocker's school record of 44.72s set in 2004.

Schooling's time is also the second fastest in NCAA history, after Stanford's Austin Staab clocked 44.18s six years ago.

The 19-year-old's win is also his first individual NCAA title. It is also the first time since Austin Surhoff in 2010 (200 individual medley) that an UT freshman won at the national championships and he is the first Longhorn to win the NCAA 100 yard fly final since Crocker in 2004.
