Singapore Sailing president Dr Ben Tan announced on Wednesday afternoon that he is willing to serve as a Nominated Member of Parliament (NMP).

The 46-year-old said: "I have been approached by senior figures in the sports community to be considered for the Nominated Member of Parliament (NMP) position. I am deeply humbled by their belief in me, and will be happy to serve if the rest of the sports community feels I am the right representative for the position."

His decision comes after Singapore Modern Pentathlon Association president Nicholas Fang, 38, said he will not be seeking a second term as an NMP.

On Tuesday, Fang was appointed chef de mission for Team Singapore at next year's SEA Games hosted on home soil, alongside Dr Tan Eng Liang.

Ben, a former national sailor, added: "NMP Nicholas Fang and the NMPs before him have done a great job representing the views of the sports community in Parliament, and I certainly recognise the need to build on that."

Ben is an Asian Games and four-time SEA Games Gold medallist in the Laser standard, and also a three-time Sportsman of the Year.
