SINGAPORE-Singapore's netballers cruised into the SEA Games semi-finals with a 84-12 win over the Philippines.
The inexperienced Philippines team were no match for the reigning Asian champions as the hosts led all the way, courtesy of their goal shooters Charmaine Soh and Yasmin Ho, who scored 22 and 25 goals respectively.
Goal attackers Chen Huifen and Pamela Liew added 17 and 20 goals respectively as well, as Singapore plundered 21 goals in each of the four quarters.
Singapore coach Ruth Aitken elected to start with 19-year-old rookie Shina Teo as wing defence, and she put in another good performance on her third appearance for the national team.
Captain Micky Lin praised Teo's performance, saying: "I think she played really well today, she was defending the whole length of the court."
Teo's performance is even more impressive as she normally plays as a goalkeeper. She said: "It's a tough position, but my team-mates have been telling me what to do, so it was okay for me."
The big win was a much-needed tonic for the side after they had let a six-point lead slip on Tuesday in a 35-35 draw against key rivals Malaysia.
Soh said: "I felt the draw really gave us a ground to stand on. At first when we came into the competition we were high in spirits and everyone's expectations for us was high. But yesterday made us come back to reality and focus more, get in the game."
Aitken said that the aim for Wednesday's game was to get their rhythm back, adding: "Obviously no shooter likes to finish in an unsuccessful manner as (Soh) did last night. But as we've seen its not what happens to you, it's about how you respond to it.
"She had great flow today, it was good to see her smile and just get back out there."
