Racing: Spalato splashes all comers to win Emirates Singapore Derby

Spalato ran a stunning race to win the $1.15 million Emirates Singapore Derby on Sunday at the Singapore Turf Cub.

The four-year-old New Zealand gelding, with Brazilian jockey Manoel Nunes astride, was taking part in only its fourth race. Starting out wide from barrier 10 in a field of 16, it stayed in the top three throughout before bursting ahead in the final furlong, winning the 2,000 metre race by a whopping 4.3 lengths.

Pre-race favourite Stepitup, who started widest from barrier 16, finished a creditable second behind Spalato.

The Emirates Singapore Derby is the third and final leg of the Singapore Four-Year-Old Challenge, a series of three races for horses of that age.
