BAD luck struck Singapore's Firdaus Rahman the World Extreme Games (WEG) Asia in Shanghai on Friday

The 27-year-old was on course to win Singapore's first medal at the event in seven years, after chalking the best score among 10 competitors in the preliminary heats of yesterday's skateboarding street final.

But in the final prelim run, he slipped while doing a trick on a railing, and hit his knee against the metal frame. His knee swelled up so badly that he could barely made it through the final, which was won by Japan's Ryo Seijiri. The United States' Jagger Eaton and Jordan Hoffart finished second and third respectively.

"I'm pretty sad actually. I knew I had a shot at the gold and I wanted it so badly," said Firdaus. "It's disappointing to get to the top five but then come back with nothing in the end. I was hoping to claim the medal back this year."

This year's WEG Asia saw about 200 athletes taking part. The event ends on Saturday.
