SINGAPORE'S badminton teams were knocked out of the Thomas Cup and Uber Cup competitions on Tuesday in New Delhi.

The men lost 1-4 to Thailand and the women 1-4 to Indonesia, a slight improvement from their 5-0 thrashings by Indonesia and South Korea respectively in their opening ties.

In the Thomas Cup Group A, second singles Huang Chao won the Republic's only point when Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk retired injured after losing their first game 21-23.

Boonsak Ponsana gave the Thais a solid start, hammering Derek Wong 21-11, 21-11 in just 29 minutes. Sudket Prapakamol and Patiphat Chalardchaleam beat Chayut Triyachart and Terry Hee 21-16, 13-21, 23-21 before Huang pulled Singapore back to 1-2 in the tie.

Maneepong Jongjit and Nipitphon Puangpuapech gave Thailand the winning point, thumping Danny Bawa Chrisnanta and Wong 21-15, 21-9 in a quick 26 minutes. Then Suppanyu Avihingsanon wrapped up proceedings, beating Sean Lee 21-12, 21-15.

Indonesia and Thailand qualify for the quarter-finals while Singapore complete their trip with a relatively easy tie against Nigeria on Wednesday.

In the Uber Cup Group X, Lindaweni Fanetri beat Chen Jiayuan 21-15, 21-15, while Tiara Rosalia Nuraidah and Suci Rizky Andini defeated Vanessa Neo and Fu Mingtian 21-14, 21-15, before Liang Xiaoyu gained Singapore's sole point by overcoming Bellaetrix Manuputty 21-14, 17-21, 14-21.

Then Nitya Krishinda Maheswari and Greysia Polii settled the tie by thrashing Yao Lei and Shinta Mulia Sari 21-11, 21-8 in 28 minutes before Maria Febe Kusumastuti beat Fu, who has had to do double duty in singles and doubles, 21-15, 21-10.

Indonesia and Korea are through to the final eight while Singapore meet Australia on Wednesday before flying home.
