Golf: PGA Championship moves to July for 2016 Olympics

LOUISVILLE (AFP) - The 2016 PGA Championship will move to July in 2016 to help accomodate the schedule for the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, where golf makes its return to the lineup.

The PGA of America announced Wednesday that it will stage the 2016 PGA Championship at Baltusrol on July 28-31, leaving the year's last major tournament to finish just ahead of the Rio Games, set for August 5-21, 2016.

The move crams three major golf events into a span of only 46 days, with the US Open at Oakmont on June 16-19 and the British Open at Royal Troon on July 14-17, leaving only one week between it and the PGA.

Not since 1971 has the PGA Championship been played outside its traditional August date and that was because the time of year was considered too hot to stage the event in Florida, where it was won by Jack Nicklaus in February.
