The 28th SEA Games hosted in Singapore started on Friday afternoon when Vietnam laid down a marker when its football team thrashed Brunei 6-0 in its Group B opener at Bishan Stadium.

With its slick football and one-touch passing, the Vietnamese U-23 side set the tone in the opening exchanges, bombarding Brunei with a series of shots within the first 15 minutes.

Vietnam's patient build-up play broke the deadlock in the 24th minute. Forward Le Thanh Binh converted a teasing cross from winger Ho Ngoc Thang after some neat work from the latter down the right flank.

Two minutes after the break, Tran Phi Son then added a second courtesy of a free-kick from substitute Nguyen Cong Phuong on the edge of the penalty area.

And in a space of 14 minutes from the 74th to 88th minutes, Mac Hong Quan, Pham Duc Huy, Nguyen Cong Phuong and captain Pham Manh Hung all netted to complete the rout.

Vietnam's second game is next Tuesday when it takes on Malaysia at Bishan Stadium while Brunei will meet Laos at the same venue on Sunday.
