MIAMI (AFP) - Miami Mayor Carlos Gimenez has proposed a new waterfront site for a stadium for David Beckham’s new soccer team, amid local resistance to the English football icon’s current plans.

In a letter to the group working with Beckham, Mr Gimenez suggested the stadium be built at a pier near the port of Miami in congested downtown Miami.

It also would be next to the American Airlines Arena where the Miami Heat basketball team plays.

“Downtown Miami will greatly benefit from the creation of a grand waterfront park that will serve to bring our urban core closer to the water, providing a magnificent bay front walk along Biscayne Bay,” Gimenez said.
