Liverpool get off to winning start, with Sterling and Sturridge on target

Liverpool started life without Luis Suarez with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Southampton in a Sunday clash at Anfield.

Raheem Sterling and Daniel Sturridge scored to help the Merseysiders, who sold 31-goal Suarez to Spanish club Barcelona last month, to a win in their opening fixture of the 2014-15 season.

Sterling had put the home side ahead after being put through on goal by Jordan Henderson.

Saints right-back Nathaniel Clyne levelled the score with a thumping effort but England striker Sturridge made sure of the three points when he tapped home from close range after a Sterling knock-down.
