Former striker Michael Owen to visit Singapore next month

SINGAPORE - Former Manchester United and Liverpool player Michael Owen will be in town next month for the first time since 2001.

The retired England striker, now 34, will be here on the invitation of Wisma Atria. The Orchard road shopping mall is holding a "GOAL! All The Way" promotion from May 29 to July 13.

Shoppers with a minimum accumulative spending of $200 will get to try their hand at a penalty shootout simulator specially flown in from Britain, with those scoring full marks qualifying for a chance to be one of 10 who meet or have brunch with Owen on June 28.

Now a regular football pundit, he also played for Real Madrid, Newcastle United and Stoke City before retiring at the end of the 2012/13 season. He last visited Singapore in 2001 with Liverpool, playing against a Singapore select side at the then-National Stadium. He scored one goal then, when Liverpool beat Team Singapore 2-0.
