MADRID (AFP) - Spain midfielder Xavi Hernandez announced on Tuesday his retirement from international football.

"I have decided to leave the national team. I think my time there has finished," the 34-year-old Barcelona player told a news conference.

He is the most capped Spanish outfield player on 133 appearances, behind only goalkeeper Iker Casillas.

He was a member of the Spain teams who won the 2008 and 2012 European championships and the 2010 World Cup.
