(REUTERS) - Fears that Argentina captain Lionel Messi had sustained a foot injury during Barcelona's 2-1 win over Real Madrid in the Liga clasico on Sunday were allayed on Monday by his club.

Word spread on social media that Messi, who is training in Washington, DC with the Argentine national team, had been seen by medical staff on Monday about his right foot, sparking fears that the star was injured.

But Barcelona dispelled the rumours on their website, saying he was cleared to play.

"FC Barcelona's medical staff in consultation with their counterparts at the Argentine Football Federation confirm that the tests carried out on Leo Messi whilst on international duty with the Argentine national side in Washington DC show that he has no injury to his right foot where he received a blow in his last league match with the blaugranas against Real Madrid," the club said on their website.

The Barca captain walked onto the Georgetown University field with Manchester United's Angel Di Maria and gave a thumbs up when asked about the condition of his foot.

He participated fully in the training which included fellow Barca teammate Javier Mascherano and Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero.

Independiente midfielder Federico Mancuello, who is rumoured to have sparked the interest of several European teams, could be seen training as part of Gerardo Martino's team.

Several hundred fans, many of whom had been invited by the Argentine embassy, filled the stands.

Argentina, preparing for the Copa America in Chile from June 11 to July 4, will play their Copa America warm-up friendly against El Salvador on Saturday.

The team has another friendly against Ecuador in New Jersey next Tuesday.
