Football: London and Munich rivals for Euro 2020 semis and final

PARIS (AFP) - The semi-finals and final of Euro 2020 will be staged in either London or Munich, European football's governing body Uefa announced on Saturday.

They were the only two cities that submitted bid dossiers for the semi-finals/final package of the new format tournament by a Friday midnight deadline.

In all, 19 cities from 19 countries are officially in the running to host games at the 2020 European football championship, which will be held across Europe for the first time, Uefa also announced.

A total of 32 countries out of Uefa's 54-strong membership had shown an interest in hosting games, but by the deadline only 19 had made formal their bids.

Uefa's executive committee has already agreed that games in 2020 will be held in 13 cities and a decision on which of the 19 bids have been successful will be made on Sept 19.

The matches will be split into 13 different packages, with 12 standard packages, including three group matches and one knockout round (round of 16 or quarter-finals), and one package for the semi-finals and the final.

The member associations/cities that submitted bid dossiers for the standard package were: Azerbaijan (Baku), Belarus (Minsk), Belgium (Brussels), Bulgaria (Sofia), Denmark (Copenhagen), England (London), Macedonia (Skopje), Germany (Munich), Hungary (Budapest), Israel (Jerusalem), Italy (Rome), Netherlands (Amsterdam), Republic of Ireland (Dublin), Romania (Bucharest), Russia (St Petersburg), Scotland (Glasgow), Spain (Bilbao), Sweden (Stockholm) and Wales (Cardiff).

Only England (London) and Germany (Munich) submitted bid dossiers for the semi-finals and final.

"We are extremely happy to have received so many bids to host Uefa Euro 2020," said Uefa president Michel Platini.

"The 60th year anniversary edition of the tournament will be an historic one, with matches played in many European countries.

"By spreading the Euro across our continent, we will allow more fans from more nations to share in the excitement of hosting such a magical event.

"Member associations will also benefit greatly from this format, since more of them will be exposed to an elite tournament and have the opportunity to increase the development of football in their respective countries."

The Euro 2016 tournament is to be held in France.
