The Singapore national football team have been left with red faces after an embarrassing 2-2 draw against Guam in a friendly at Jalan Besar Stadium on Tuesday night.

Bernd Stange's Lions, ranked 153rd in the Fifa world rankings, took on the Pacific island, who are ranked 14 places below. Until 2009, Guam had been winless against Fifa-ranked opponents for 35 years.

Defender Shawn Nicklaw's opened the scoring after his rampaging run was left unchecked in the 37th minute and he stormed towards the near post to stab home forward Shane Malcolm's low cross from the right.

But the Lions equalised in the 54th minute when right-back Ismadi Mukhtar delivered a cross for winger Faris Ramli to head home.

Unable to keep up their fast-paced pressing game, the visitors were visibly tired after the break but still played an effective counter-attacking game.

In the 73rd minute, Guam captain Jason Cunliffe picked up a throw-in and, from the edge of the box, he bent a 20m shot that gave goalkeeper Izwan Mahbud no chance.

However, Singapore managed to level the scores again in the 79th minute when captain Shahril Ishak crossed for centre-back Baihakki Khaizan to finish from close range.

The result meant that it had been a winless international break for Stange. Last Thursday, the Lions lost 2-0 to Thailand in a friendly in Korat.
