Arsenal fans hopeful of another marquee Mesut Ozil-esque signing on transfer deadline day by manager Arsene Wenger were left cursing the Frenchman on social media instead.

A fan posted a picture of Wenger at London's Heathrow Airport, as details emerged that he was on his way to Rome to referee the "Match for Peace", aimed at promoting inter-religious peace through sports.

Stars such as ex-French international David Trezeguet and Juventus midfielder Andrea Pirlo were also expected to attend.

With an injury to main target man Olivier Giroud ruling him out till next year, many feel striking reinforcements are a top priority for the Gunners, who were frustrated in a 1-1 draw away to Leicester City on Sunday.

Manchester United's surprise signing of Colombian forward Radamel Falcao and Chelsea's capture of QPR striker Loic Remy further rubbed salt into Arsenal fans' wounds, given that both players were previously linked to the Emirates.

Judging by the backlash from fans online, many were not amused.
