Football: FAS names 19-man team to take on France Under-21 side in June friendly

The Football Association of Singapore (FAS) has unveiled the squad who will square off against a France Under-21 team in a friendly in Reunion Island on June 3 (Singapore time).

With an average age of just over 22 years, the 19-man team are made up mainly of players below age 24 - with the exception of striker Khairul Amri, 29 - who will be eligible for the 2014 Asian Games held in South Korea later this year.

Their opponents play in top European leagues.

National coach Bernd Stange hopes the squad can not only gain from playing against a top European team but also convince the Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC) that they deserve to be sent to the Asian Games.

"It is necessary for our players, especially our best young players, to play against top quality teams on a regular basis," he said.

"With a good performance, we can expect a higher chance for nomination by (the SNOC) to participate in the 2014 Asian Games held in South Korea."

The team will leave for Reunion Island on May 30.
