BATAM - The Singapore men's basketball team won the South-east Asia Basketball Association Stankovic Cup on Thursday, after defeating Malaysia 69-61 at the Hi-Test Arena in Batam. They had beaten hosts Indonesia 72-62 on Wednesday.

It is the cagers' first victory in the biennial competition, which featured only three teams this year. Regional powerhouses Philippines sat out to focus on the Fiba Basketball World Cup in August, while Thailand did not participate owing to the political turmoil at home.

The win also means that Singapore have earned a spot in the 5th Fiba Asia Cup, which will be held in Wuhan, China, from July 11-19. Their fine form followed after they ended a 34-year medal drought at last year's SEA Games, where they finished with bronze medal.

Point guard and acting captain Wong Weilong was in superb form for the team, averaging a team-high 21 points over two games.
