SINGAPORE - Despite the recent series of train disruptions, the transport authorities and rail operators are making steady progress to reduce downtime and malfunctions, PM Lee Hsien Loong said.

In a Facebook post on Thursday night, Mr Lee acknowledged that maintaining and building the public transport system is a "tough, high pressure job".

"Every night after trains stop running, the maintenance and repair crews have only a few hours to maintain the tracks and trains, to get them ready for another day of service," he posted.

"The Land Transport Authority and rail operators have also been working hard to reduce downtime and malfunctions. Unfortunately we've had a series of incidents recently, but we are making steady progress."

Mr Lee highlighted Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew's speech in Parliament on Wednesday in which Mr Lui mentioned the upcoming upgrades to the transport system.

"It may take a while, but commuters will benefit from all these efforts," Mr Lee added.
