SMRT to double its hybrid taxi fleet to 1,300 next year

SINGAPORE - Transport operator SMRT Corporation will add 700 eco-friendly Prius Hybrid taxies by end March next year, doubling its fleet of such taxis to 1,300.

This means a third of the company's entire fleet of 3,800 will be environmentally-friendly, including its current 99 Hyundai Azeras.

The first batch of 600 Prius Hybrid taxies were introduced in October last year. The next batch of 400 will start plying the roads by the end of September. The Prius Hybrid is known for its fuel efficiency and emits less carbon than a petrol or diesel vehicle.

Mr Benny Lim, managing director of SMRT Roads, said the new hybrid vehicles "will offer our passengers quieter and smoother rides while guaranteeing a cleaner and greener ride".
