SINGAPORE - Siting the Singapore-Kuala Lumpur high-speed rail terminus in Jurong East will open up new opportunities for the Jurong Lake District, said Minister for Culture, Community and Youth Lawrence Wong on Tuesday.

"This opens up many more opportunities for the whole area. So once we have the exact location of the terminus, we can look at the overall master-plan, and consider land use and development plans for the longer-term," he wrote in a Facebook post.

"The potential is huge. We can make Jurong Lake District the biggest commercial and regional centre outside the city, with beautiful gardens and water bodies, and unique leisure opportunities for Singaporeans of all ages!" added Mr Wong, who chairs a steering committee driving the development of the district.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong announced on Tuesday that the Singapore terminus for the high-speed rail line to Kuala Lumpur will be sited in Jurong East.

This dovetails with plans to make the western region Singapore's second business district, he said.

Mr Wong, who is also Second Minister for Communications and Information, was appointed head of the 14-member Jurong Lake District committee last October.

Developments in the region include the Jurong Lake Gardens, a new science centre, and other commercial and residential developments.
