SINGAPORE - The last mothballed station on the Sengkang LRT line will open on June 27.

Operator SBS Transit said on Monday that Kupang station, located in Fernvale on the western loop, will open to cater to the travel needs of commuters moving into the new residential developments in the area.

With this, the Sengkang LRT - completed in 2004 - will be fully operational.

To cope with increased demand, an additional 194 weekly train trips will be added to the Sengkang West Loop. Forty will be added to weekday mornings from 6am to 9.30am, while another 40 will be introduced during the weekday evening hours from 6.15pm to 9.30pm.

This will reduce waiting time by one minute - from the current five to six minutes, to four to five minutes in the mornings; and from four to five minutes, to three to four minutes in the evenings.

At the same time, on the Punggol East Loop, 70 new weekly trips will be added to the weekday evening schedule from 6.15pm to 9.30pm.

Demand on the Sengkang LRT has grown by around 9 per cent from a year ago, with average daily ridership hovering around 60,000.

Meanwhile, four stations remain closed on the Punggol LRT.
