SINGAPORE - More than 450 public transport staff and drivers were recognised for outstanding service at the Transport Gold award ceremony on Friday.

Among them were three "Kindness Champions" who have gone above and beyond in efforts to serve commuters.

ComfortDelGro taxi driver Mr Lim Keng Seong, 62, directed motorists away from a handcyclist in difficulty and detoured to return a passenger her belongings. Madam Mas Siti, 42, a TransitLink customer service officer, helped a first-time visitor buy the Singapore Tourist Pass, making up the difference out of her own pocket.

Senior bus captain Mr V Ramjee, 44, has won a loyal following among his passengers with his enthusiastic attitude.

Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew, the guest of honour, cited the importance of human interaction in defining the commuting experience, especially in light of plans to double the rail network by 2030.

He also stressed the role of commuters in reciprocating graciousness on their journeys.

The annual Transport Gold awards, which encourage public transport staff to go the extra mile in helping commuters, are organised by 14 public transport companies and associations and supported by the Singapore Kindness Movement, Traffic Police, and Land Transport Authority.
