SINGAPORE - Commuters travelling to the Expo and Changi Airport stations can expect shorter travel time when a new platform is added to Tanah Merah MRT station in 2024.

It will allow for two tracks for the East-West Line and another two, heading to and from Changi Airport, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) said on Monday. This is an improvement from now, when trains going to and from Changi Airport use only the middle track at Tanah Merah station.

Commuters taking the train to Expo and Changi Airport now have to wait between 7 and 13 minutes, but this is expected to shorten once the platform is up. "With the new platform and additional trains injected into the system, trains can run at shorter intervals. The actual frequency will be confirmed at a later date based on future demand," said the LTA.

Works on the new platform will start in 2016 and to make way for it, about a 1.5km stretch of New Upper Changi Road will be re-aligned as well, the LTA added.
