Last major civil contracts for Thomson line awarded

SINGAPORE - The Land Transport Authority has awarded the last three of 25 major civil contracts for the Thomson MRT Line.

The contracts were for Orchard, Marina South and Gardens by the Bay stations and associated tunnels, and amounted to around $1.32 billion.

Said LTA deputy chief executive Chua Chong Kheng: "With the award of these three civil contracts, LTA has awarded all the 25 major civil contracts for Thomson Line at a total cost of approximately $7.77 billion.

"Construction works for Thomson Line are currently in full swing and the line is on track to open in phases between 2019 and 2021."

Japanese builder Penta-Ocean Construction clinched the deal for the Orchard station at $498 million. In a joint venture with Bachy Soletanche Singapore, Penta-Ocean will have to build under the existing North-south MRT Line.

Orchard station will be an interchange station connecting the Thomson Line with the North-South Line. When opened, commuters on the North-South Line will have greater accessibility to the Thomson and Havelock precincts.

A joint venture between Sinohydro Corp and Sembcorp Design and Construction clinched the deal for the Marina South station and tunnels, for $488 million.

Sinohydro is an hydropower engineering and construction company which has been involved in a wide range of international infrastructure projects.

The contract for the Gardens by the Bay station and tunnels has been awarded to Nishimatsu Construction, which is partnering Bachy Soletanche Singapore. The $331 million project will also serve as a Civil Defence shelter.

The station will link the Thomson Line to the future Eastern Region Line.
