SINGAPORE - The upcoming Bedok Integrated Transport Hub, set to open by the end of the year, promises a cooler and more convenient commute.

The 1.6-hectare complex will have air-conditioned access for people who need to transfer between the bus interchange and MRT station, and it will also be linked to Bedok Mall.

The integrated hub will be served by 27 bus services, be equipped with barrier-free facilities, and 10 berths for boarding and five for alighting. There will also be dedicated boarding points and graduated kerb edges for wheelchair-bound passengers.

It will also have better amenities for bus captains and other staff such as a bigger staff lounge and kitchen facilities in the staff canteen.

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) said on Saturday that the new interchange is expected to benefit about 40,000 commuters daily. It will also be the first integrated transport hub to achieve the Building and Construction Authority's Green Mark Platinum Award because of the energy efficient lighting for the concourse, LED lighting for the driveway and bus park area, as well as a water-cooled air-conditioning system, it has in place.

This latest interchange is the seventh hub where the bus interchange and MRT station are linked with adjoining commercial developments, said the LTA. Three more integrated transport hubs are currently under construction at Joo Koon, Bukit Panjang and Yishun in tandem with redevelopment in those areas. The hubs in Joo Koon and Bukit Panjang are scheduled to be completed in 2015 and while the one in Yishun will open in 2018.
