SINGAPORE - Traffic around the Shangri-La Hotel in Orchard is expected to be heavier this weekend, as police beef up security measures in the area for an international conference.

The 13th International Institute Of Strategic Studies (IISS) Asia Security Summit is scheduled to take place at the hotel from Friday, May 30 to Sunday, June 1.

During this period, the police will be conducting road blocks and security checks at the hotel and in the vicinity.

Police advised motorists in a statement on Wednesday to avoid taking roads around the hotel, especially Anderson and Orange Grove Roads, and to allow for extra time for travel as "traffic is expected to be slow moving".

On top of additional security measures, entry of commercial vehicles - such as those with license plates starting with G, W, X and Y - to Anderson Road will also be restricted. To get to the hotel, drivers of such vehicles should use Draycott Park or Draycott Drive instead.

Police added that motorists hoping to drive to Tanglin Road from Stevens Road should avoid taking the short cut through Anderson and Orange Grove Roads and use Scotts Road instead.

Scotts Road should also be used when travelling to Balmoral Road, or from Orchard to Stevens Road.

Hotel visitors should also car pool or take public transport as parking facilities within Shangri-La are limited. Motorists should not park along nearby roads, as those found parking indiscriminately will have their vehicles towed away. Vehicles causing obstruction will also be towed.

"Public understanding and cooperation is greatly appreciated," the police said.
