Changi Airport's liquor and tobacco stores are getting a major facelift that will make them bigger and better.

As part of upgrading works that will span across all three terminals, travellers can look forward to new double-storey stores as well as more product choices, said DFS Group which runs the stores.

In a joint release with Changi Airport Group on Wednesdsay, DFS, which also has outlets at other airports including in Hong Kong and Japan, said the Singapore store will offer travellers a unique experience.

At the Terminal 3 store for example, Raffles Hotel will set up its legendary Long Bar - where the Singapore Sling cocktail was invented in the early 1900s. There will also be a lounge for DFS members - the first for any airport. The works are expected to start soon and will be completed in 2016.

The planned enhancements are part of a new six-year contract, effective April, recently awarded to DFS which has been operating at Changi Airport for more than three decades.

The tender was secured after a seven-month evaluation by Changi Airport Group which had received bids from major global players.

The airport's executive vice-president (commercial) Lim Peck Hoon said: "We are thrilled to be working with DFS on the transformation of Changi's liquor and tobacco concessions, which serve as the key anchors of our retail offerings."

DFS' senior vice-president (global design) Kevin Roche said: "We want to create an environment that will bring a sense of curiosity and wonderment, and inspire the traveller to linger, explore and discover what Changi and Singapore have to offer."
