Cement mixer crashes into tree at NTU; no one injured

SINGAPORE - The driver of a cement mixer lost control of his vehicle on Wednesday morning, sending the heavy vehicle into a tree at Nanyang Technological University (NTU).

Sales engineer Yusri Mohammed Sulaiman, 33, was on his way to work when he saw the badly damaged cement mixer.

"I saw the driver was still inside, so I stopped my car and went to see if I could help him," said Mr Yusri. The driver appeared unhurt, said Mr Yusri, but he had problems communicating with the driver because the latter did not speak English.

Mr Yusri later took pictures of the damaged vehicle and shared them on citizen journalism website Stomp.

The Straits Times contacted Sinmix, the company that owned the cement mixer, and understood that the driver had been working for the company for a year with no incident, until the crash on Wednesday.

A spokesman from NTU said that the vehicle from Sinmix had no official business at NTU and was just passing through the campus on its way to its destination when the accident occurred. No other vehicle or passenger was involved in the incident. The Traffic Police are investigating.

The Straits Times also contacted the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) and the spokesman said an ambulance was dispatched to Nanyang Crescent after they received a call at 7.25am, but the driver declined to be sent to the hospital.
