Transport giant ComfortDelGro is testing a new camera system that can alert cabbies of risks on the road.

Known as "Mobileye", the camera mounted on the taxi's windscreen on algorithms that "read" different types of traffic signs.

It then determines the risks associated with the surrounding environment and provides real-time audio-visual warnings via a 49mm display unit.

For example, if the system detects that the taxi is travelling too close to another vehicle or a pedestrian. It will produce a beep sound and the "car icon" or "pedestrian icon" will immediately appear on the display.

Mobileye, which will work side by side with the first-generation in-vehicle camera which was installed in last year, will be tested in 30 taxis for the next six months, the company said.

The system, which costs $2,300 each, is similar to alert programs found in some high-end cars.
