500 roads to get more energy-efficient lighting under LTA scheme

SINGAPORE - Some 4,000 street lights at 500 roads here will be replaced with more energy-efficient Light Emitting Diodes (LED) lighting from July, as part of an ongoing Land Transport Authority (LTA) programme.

The lights involved are in areas with less traffic, where street lights have a lower wattage of about 70 to 150 watts and are reaching the end of their product life, said the LTA on Tuesday. It had first conducted a three-year-trial along Northumberland Road and Tekka Lane near Little India.

The LED lighting offers up to 30 per cent energy savings compared with the high-pressure sodium vapour lamps in use now, but also meet the required lighting standards. Works will start in July and be completed by the second half of 2018, it added.

The LTA is also exploring the use of LED technology for lamps along major arterial roads and expressways. It is now trying them out along Lorong 1 Toa Payoh in a trial that will end by 2016.
